Here are the FAQs for the BYC junior sailing program.

 


1 - Q - What should my child bring to sailing class?
A - a towel, covered shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunblock, something to
drink, a snack, bathing suit back to top

 

2 - Q - . Does my child need to know how to swim?
A - Yes. There is a swim test on the first day of class. It isn't a
long swim, but each students needs to feel comfortable in the water. back to top

 

3 Q - . Will my child need his or her own lifejacket?
A - No. BYC provides lifejackets for all the students. Lifejackets
are worn at all times while on the docks, boats and in the water. back to top

 

4 Q - . Where do the lessons take place?
A - The typical sailing area for the JY-15 classes are near Byc's
floating dock which is close to the swimming area at Haven's Beach. The
Opti classes usually stay within the harbor and are seen easily from
BYc's clubhouse. back to top

 

5 Q - What boats does BYC use?
A - OPTI and JY-15 for the younger and beginner students.
- 420 for the older racing students back to top

 

6 Q - Will my child be sailing alone?
A - No. The first week of lessons we have 2-4 students on a JY-15
with 1 instructor. As the young sailor progresses we put them alone on an
Opti, which is the #1 training boat for young sailors. But, there is
still 2-3 instructors close by. back to top

 

7 Q - .If my child does a couple of weeks, is there more advance lessons?
A - Yes. We have the Beginner program for the first 1 to 2 weeks,
then we have the Ad. Beginner program, which uses Optis, and is for the
students who have sailed at least 1 week with BYC and typically students
stay in this program for 3 weeks. We then have an Intermediate class
and we also have a racing program for the most serious and older sailors.
To be in the racing program the Head Instructor most approve. back to top

 

8 Q - .Is there class when it rains?
A - Yes. The instructors provide plenty of learning expereinces in and
around the clubhouse for the students. There is knot tying games,
navigation skills activitities, group building games, lectures on more
advance sailing skills and other sailing related games. back to top

 

9 Q - Can I receive a refund if it rains or if my child misses a class?
A - BYC can not control the weather or wind so we do not give refunds
for weather related problems. If your child misses a class for
non-emergency reasons we can not issue refunds. Byc does not have time or space
to allow for make up days. If there is a family emergency please speak
to the Head Instructor or the office manager. back to top

 

10 Q - Does the racing program consist of a team?
A - Yes. Our racing team races locally against teams from both the
North and South Fork of Long Island. We also race in regional and national
events. This past summer we had three juniors compete in Bayshore, N.Y.
at the Semi-National Junior Championships. BYC is also in its first
year working with Pierson High School, Sag Harbor's local high school, in
forming a high school racing program. back to top
