Beginner
Class ( meets mornings 9-12)
Goals: to learn
basic sailing skills and to have fun on a boat.
- Monday- group
building activities - name game, ice breaker, land drills/lecture: rules of
the water, parts of boat activity, rigging the boat activity, learn where
the wind comes from, water drills- swim test, capsize drill.
- Tuesday - lecture
on tacking, lecture on points of sail, land drill on tacking, water drills
- sailing around a box, tack on whistle, figure 8.
- Wednesday-
lecture on jybing, lecture on docking, land drill in jybing, water drills
- sailing in box,_follow the leader, figure 8, docking.
- Thursday -
lecture on ----man over board, water drill - man over board, sailing around
a triangle.
- Friday- lecture
on weather, lecture on navigation, water drill - explore/adventure in bay,
sailing up to a mark, awards given out.
Each day all students
rig and derig the boats and all skipper. When it is really windy adjustments
are made.
Advance
Beginner class ( meets mornings 9-12)
Goals: to sail
upwind, to learn a little about racing and to keep boat under control.
- Monday- group
building activities, lecture on docking, points of sail, sailing in the harbor,
water drills - reaching, sail without sail, docking, figure 8, sailing around
a square, follow the leader.
- Tuesday - lecture
on current, points of sail, water drills - sailing upwind, avoiding the no
go zone, sail through cut, sailing in tight corners.
- Wednesday -
lecture on racing and why racing makes you a better sailor, land drill - racing
course, water drill - sailing around a triangle, race starts, race finishes.
- Thursday -
lecture on navigation, bigger boats, water drill - scavenger hunt, fun race,
docking, sailing backwards.
- Friday -lecture
on --- speed control, water drill - fun races, docking, adventure sail, sailing
upwind.
Each day all students
rig and derig their own boat. When the weather is bad, we adjust accordingly.
