BYC Jr. Sailing Program Class Outline Here
are the FAQs for the BYC junior sailing program.
The Breakwater Yacht Club Youth Sailing program is entering its 16th season of sailing lessons. When the program started, it served only 12 students for two weeks of lessons. Since then, the interest and enthusiasm has been overwhelming. The program expanded to over 350 students during the nine weeks of last summers season. In all, over two thousand students have participated in the youth sailing program. With the support of the community and fund raising efforts, our scholarship program has also grown. This year again, the Breakwater Yacht Club will be offering 60 scholarships to local public schools and youth organizations. These schools and youth organizations include Amagansett School, Sag Harbor Boy Scouts, Bridgehampton School, Pierson Middle School, Sag Harbor Elementary School, Sag Harbor Girl Scouts, Sag Harbor Youth Center, East Hampton Middle School, Southampton Intermediate School, Southampton elementary School, Springs Public School, Wainscott Community School, Sagaponack School;. Montauk School, Breakwater Yacht Club. This kind of success is no accident. The Sailing program has had the benefit of some terrific instructors. These instructors have been a source of enthusiasm, dedication and innovative ideas. Over time, junior instructors have been added from the ranks of students who initially learned how to sail in the program. These junior instructors add a special level of continuity and depth by sharing their experiences and ideas. This season the youth sailing program is offering beginner, intermediate and racing classes. Beginner classes run for one week. Lessons include learning about rigging a boat and what to do when it capsizes. A sense of how a boat responds to wind is taught tot he students before they see these concepts in action on the water. Practice in the form of sailing games and mock racers are excellent tools for learning. We believe in having fun, first foremost. Our students seem to agree! Students are encouraged to take more than one week of lessons if they are interested. There are four beginnner levels before students enter the intermediate program. Intermediates spend more time fine-tuning their boat handling skills and are introduced to formal racing rules and basic racing strategies. The racing students continue to hone their skills and compete with other clubs. Community interest, individual contributions and the fundraising efforts of the Sag Harbor Cup Regatta make the Youth Sailing Program possible. A sincere and overwhelming Thank You is owed unanimously from the instructors, students, and administration.
