SAG HARBOR CUP Hi BYC Sailors & others that raced
At the start, the race was a bit slow (with light WNW winds), but with tide helping us along. Tide was against us going through Greenport (perhaps slack for those that were further behind), but the wind picked up for boats by the time we had to go against current in the South ferry area.
I wish I knew all the names of those that helped at the party. Jane Babcook deserves a big thanks for getting all the party goods and food together. Thanks to all the workers for set-up, clean-up, at the grill, collecting party money, running the bar and the runners from the grill to the buffet. I know Laura White did a lot of work too on getting things to be auctioned. I tried to get more info from the Sag Harbor Cup Committee to know better who to thank personally, but haven't heard back yet, so maybe I'll thank you all more individually in a future email. Thanks also to Chris DiSunno, Lee Oldak, & Mark Webber (on the Committee).
I've attached the 2 page results in pdf format. The 2nd page separates the 2 divisions. Because there was a large spinnaker division and a small non-spin division (w/only one boat placing), we will be giving out 5 trophies in the spinnaker division and 1 trophy in non-spin.
The ELIYA Awards Dinner will be Nov. 7 at the Chequit on Shelter Island. The BYC Awards Dinner will be around that same time. Sag Harbor Cup trophies will be given out at both awards dinners.

The Notice of Race for the 27 th Annual Sag Harbor Cup, to be hosted by Breakwater Yacht Club, is available on the club’s website: www.BreakwaterYC.org. The Cup Race will be held on Saturday, August 15 th. The Race format will be a Pursuit Race whereby yachts start based on their handicap with the faster classes starting later so that all boats reach the finish line at approximately the same time. The first yacht will leave the starting line at 10:05 AM. The course is a circumnavigation of Shelter Island (subject to course shortening due to poor winds or weather).
The Sag Harbor Cup was inaugurated in 1982 and has been hosted by the BYC since 1988. The regatta mission has remained consistent over time – to support youth sailing and to inspire a love for the waters around Sag Harbor among young people. This year’s proceeds from racing entry fees, a post race party along with a reggae band (Project vibe) and silent auction will benefit the Pierson HS Sailing Team.

On August 16th, 2008 Breakwater Yacht Club hosted the 26th Annual Sag Harbor Cup. The race was inaugurated in 1982 and has been hosted by the BYC since 1988. The regatta mission has remained consistent over time – to support youth sailing and to inspire a love for the waters around Sag Harbor among young people. The benefit raised funds for BYC’s Jr. Sailing Program scholarships for local area youth and for the Pierson HS Sailing Team.
The 2008 regatta was a pursuit race whereby yachts start based on their handicap with the faster classes starting later so that all boats reach the finish line at approximately the same time. The first yacht left the starting line at 10:05 AM against an ebbing current and with a light breeze of 5 – 8 knots. The last yacht crossed the starting line at 10:59 AM. The course was a circumnavigation of Shelter Island.
Overall regatta winners for first, second and third place were: Gossip first place; Skoot second place, 57 seconds behind and Purple Haze in third place, one minute 23 seconds later.
