2011 Oz Trophy Race Sailing Instructions
Yours in Sailing,
The Oz Trophy Race is just around the corner, so get your female skippers lined up and email me the full names so I can put them on the scratchsheet and results. The NOR for the Oz Race is attached. Summer Series Skippers don't need to fill out any forms, but need to tell me the name of the female skipper and if you are changing division (to non-spin).
We are having an exciting pre-start for the Oz Race this year. Sag Harbor is being visited this summer by 10 Military veterans familys who have been invited out to "Vacation" in the hamptons as part of an arrangement by a Not for Profit organization and "Jordans Initiative" a local organization headed by Chris Hearter. Anyhow, Chris has arranged for the families to all go out on one of the South Ferry boats for a harbor cruise that night, along with Vivian and the Merry Makers. They are supposed to leave the ferry slip around 5pm heading to near Jimmy Buffet's dock, and we were hoping that the boats might get out a bit earlier than usual so that the boats (flying the American Flag) could do a Pass in Review salute. A Marine Corps helicopter is supposed to fly over the ferry a couple times after the boats have finished the parade by the ferry.

BYC Racing Results 07/07/10 Oz Race
As I recollect, there was a very large sailboat named Oz, that Fred Endemann used to skipper (I believe as a paying job). I don't recall the name of the owner, but he had the Tinman trophy made. There used to be races once a summer on a weekend, where women were at the helm or often the whole crew were women. I believe Carol Morse had been the last one to win the perpetual trophy. Oz was sold and the race no longer was held. The race wasn't usually well attended (especially when you needed to have a crew of only women), so in 2005, Carol decided to have it be integrated into the Wednesday Night Racing at BYC, where we have a lot of women sailors. Last year the race was opened up to other sailors of Eastern LI. I didn't have the names of the females at the helm when we first started, but here are the records that I have:
7/6/05 Spin Purple Haze, NS Div 3 Ace - There was one start and one course so the overall trophy probably went to Purple Haze for the best corrected time.
7/5/06 Spin Div 2 Purple Haze, Spin Div 1 White Lightning, NS Div 3 Ace. Div 1 & 2 had same start and course so overall Spin winner was Purple Haze with the best corrected time.
7/4/07 Spin Buckaroo, NS Instant Karma (Charlene Kagel). The overall winner was Buckaroo w/ Audrey Niewenhous at the helm.
7/2/08 Spin Div 1 Team Tonic (Ellen Sanders), Spin Div 2 Skoot (Liz Joyce), NS Div 3 Impromptu (Lynn Leary). Overall for Spin was Team Tonic.
7/8/09 Spin Div 1 Gossip (Tiffany Skinner), Spin Div 2 White Lightning (Sharon Horn), NS Div 3 Plurabelle (Andrea Bourel). Overall winner - Gossip If you want the pdf's of the 2005 to 2008 results, I can send them to you. 2009 OZ pdf results

Skinner, Horn and Bourel win OZ TROPHY RACE
The 15th annual Oz Trophy race was hosted by Breakwater Yacht Club on July 8th. The 2009 race was sponsored by Dear Plum (www.dearplum.com) a fashion company specializing in beach/boat bathing suit cover-ups. A critical eligibility requirement was that all yachts have a female helmsman from the warning gun to the finish line. First place winners in each division received a gift from Dear Plum.
Sailing conditions changed dramatically during the course of the Race. At the start, winds were out of the Northwest at 5 knots with an ebbing tide. By the finish, winds had increased to 30 knots out of the Northeast. The change in conditions was not without incident. The Race Committee’s boat, stationed at the finish line, began dragging its anchor as yachts were finishing. When their engine would not start they were rescued by the committee boat at the other end of the line and towed back for re-anchoring.
As with all sanctioned sailing races, a cardinal rule is that yachts must finish with as many crew members as they start with. Loki was forced back to pick up crew Madeleine Kiss after a gybe sent her into the water. Loki did a 720 degree penalty round to pick Madeleine up.
Further confusion forced Purple Haze and Roxanne to withdraw after rounding one race marker to port rather than to starboard.
First place prizes went to Tiffany Skinner (Gossip) in Division 1, Sharon Horn (White Lightning) Division 2 and Andrea Bourel (Plurabelle) Division 3.
The first four races of Breakwater’s Summer Series were re-scored as one yacht changed Divisions and another’s rating was revised. In the June 3rd race, Skoot took honors in Division 1, Wave Equation in Division 2 and Plurabelle in Division 3. In the June 10th race, Gossip placed first in Division 1, White Lightning in Division 2 and Plurabelle in Division 3. On June 17th, Skoot again finished first in Division 1; Osprey finished first in Division 2 and Plurabelle again took first in Division 3. The June 24th race saw Ice-Nine in first place in Division 1, Osprey in Division 2 and Plurabelle in Division 3. The July 1st race was won by Gossip, Division 1, Kingfisher, Division 2 and Loki, Division 3. The Summer Series continues July 15th, 6 PM in Major’s Cove.
