2009 Sag Harbor Cup:

At the start, the race was a bit slow (with light WNW winds), but with tide helping us along. Tide was against us going through Greenport (perhaps slack for those that were further behind), but the wind picked up for boats by the time we had to go against current in the South ferry area.

I wish I knew all the names of those that helped at the party. Jane Babcook deserves a big thanks for getting all the party goods and food together. Thanks to all the workers for set-up, clean-up, at the grill, collecting party money, running the bar and the runners from the grill to the buffet. I know Laura White did a lot of work too on getting things to be auctioned. I tried to get more info from the Sag Harbor Cup Committee to know better who to thank personally, but haven't heard back yet, so maybe I'll thank you all more individually in a future email. Thanks also to Chris DiSunno, Lee Oldak, & Mark Webber (on the Committee).

I've attached the 2 page results in pdf format. The 2nd page separates the 2 divisions. Because there was a large spinnaker division and a small non-spin division (w/only one boat placing), we will be giving out 5 trophies in the spinnaker division and 1 trophy in non-spin.

The ELIYA Awards Dinner will be Nov. 7 at the Chequit on Shelter Island. The BYC Awards Dinner will be around that same time. Sag Harbor Cup trophies will be given out at both awards dinners.

Skippers and others involved in RC & party,

The Scratchsheet with the starting times for each boat is attached in pdf format which is the best for printing out. I will have extra copies at the 9am Skippers meeting. Make sure that you have your VHF radio tuned to channel 72 to keep informed as the starts are proceeding. If we must postpone the start, the RC boat will try to start 10 or 20 minutes later, so that it is easy to figure out your new start time. I've also attached the Sailing Instructions for the Sag Harbor Cup.

The party after the race is from 5:30 to 7:30 with the results announced at 6:30. I'm now told that besides the burgers & dogs, there will be chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, and mac & cheese. There will be beer, wine, Goslings Rum & ginger beer. I assume there will also be some water and soda. Two party tickets are included with each boat entry and extra crew tickets can be bought at the door for $25pp. If you want to stay longer for the Reggae band (Project Vibe starting at 7:30) or the Silent Auction (starting at 8:00) all you need to do is pay an extra $10. There will be snacks, beer & wine at the Silent Auction Cocktail Party.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email or call,

Drevet - if you are racing Breakaway, it would have to be in the spinnaker division (starting the same time as Margaret). Please contact me so that we can take care of getting a waiver.

East End Sailors,

The 27th Annual Sag Harbor Cup, Saturday, August 15, 2009, is a fundraiser to help fund Breakwater's Junior Sailing program. It helps pay for scholarships for students. The fee may be more than some other races, but it includes 2 tickets to the BBQ party and $50 of it is tax deductible. The party is from 5:30 - 7:30pm with the announcement of the results at 6:30. Breakwater is continuing the fun with a Silent Auction Cocktail Party that starts at 8:00. The popular Reggae band "Project Vibe" will start playing at 7:30. The BBQ (includes: burgers, dogs, chips & some other snacks, beer, wine, soda, water, & rum drinks) party tickets are $25pp, but if you want to stay past 7:30, you can enjoy the band and Silent Auction for only an additional $10 (of course a larger donation is welcomed). Those wanting to only go to the Silent Auction Cocktail Party will pay $50 (munchies, beer & wine). If you want to donate something or some service to the Silent Auction, contact Laura White -
LolitaW2000@aol.com, 631-478-8385(cell) or Lee Oldak - 1mortoy@amagansettbeachco.com, 631-267-6325W.

For the second time, the Sag Harbor Cup will be a "pursuit" race, where the start times are staggered, based on the boats PHRF certificate number. The nice thing about this type of race, is when you cross the finish line, all the boats behind you, have lost to you. Of course that also means those boats ahead of you, have beaten you. The attached Notice of Race (NOR) mentions contacts for dockage in Sag Harbor, but the contact info for limited free dockage at Breakwater YC was left out by mistake: Club Administrator - Steve Novak, 631-725-4604.

The deadline for getting in your entries has been extended to Wednesday, Aug. 12 by 4pm. If you are sending the entry by snail mail after Sunday, Aug. 9, then please mail it to: Joan Worthing, 104 S. Magee St., Southampton, NY 11968. The last time that I will pick up entries from the BYC clubhouse will be at 4pm on Wednesday, Aug. 12. You can also register and pay online by going to:
https://usa.regatta-manager.com/BreakwaterYachtClub/27sagharborcup.

There will be a short skipper's briefing at the BYC clubhouse at 9am. Scratch sheets with boats starting times & the Sailing instructions will be emailed to entrants by Friday evening and will be available online. The warning signal for the first boat will sound at 10am.

Skippers & others

After last night's Sag Harbor Cup meeting last night, I just wanted to let you in on some final decisions that were made.

1. The amended NOR for the Sag Harbor Cup is attached. You may enter online (note website address is fixed from what is in the ELIYA yearbook - it's being changed soon on the ELIYA website) or you may send an ELIYA race entry form to me (address below) or to BYC (P.O. Box 2601, Sag Harbor, NY 11963). I've attached a Race Entry form too. Entries should be in by Monday, August 10.

2. The entry fee of $100 (minus $10 for 2009 ELI-PHRF and minus $5 for US Saiiling membership) includes 2 party tickets that the skipper can pick up at the party. The BBQ party includes beer, wine, & some rum. If you're a vegetarian, I'm sure the person at the grill would cook up some veggie burgers for you, if you bring them. The BBQ is from 5:30 to 7:30. The cost is $25pp - pay at the door - exact change or checks are encouraged. If you want to hang out after 7:30 then make an additional payment of $10 to listen to some Reggae, participate in the Silent Auction, enjoy more beer & wine, & socialize with those coming to the evening fundraiser. The announcing of the results will be at 6:30. Trophies will be given out at the BYC Fall Awards Dinner & the ELIYA Dinner (Nov. 7 at the Chequit).

3. The Sag Harbor Cup and the Cocktail Party/Silent Auction are important fundraisers for BYC to allow us to continue giving scholarships for the Junior sailors, among other things, so we could use some help other than money, too. If you have an item and/or a service that you would like to donate for the Silent Auction, then please contact Laura White -
LolitaW2000@aol.com, 631-478-8385(cell) or Lee Oldak - 1mortoy@amagansettbeachco.com, 631-267-6325W. We could also use some volunteers: man the party ticket table for an hour or so, help with set up of BBQ or Auction, and help with clean up. To co-ordinate where we need your help the most, contact Laura White - LolitaW2000@aol.com, 631-478-8385(cell). Perhaps you are racing, but a friend or spouse would like to help with set-up; this is a fundraiser, so they would still have to pay $25 for the BBQ, but I'm hoping they will probably be listed in a thank you email after 8/15.

4. If you're up for more than just the 5:30 - 7:30 BBQ party, then stay for the Reggae music of Project Vibe (7:30 - 10 or 10:30) and the Cocktail Party w/Silent Auction. The cost for those that didn't pay for the BBQ will be $50pp, but the sailors can hang out longer for just an additional $10 when you pay for the BBQ party. (Of course a larger donation will be accepted with great thanks) There will be lots of great things on which to bid, great music, and socializing.

5. There may be room on the RC Boat. Contact me and I'll pass along your contact info to Gordon.

SAG HARBOR CUP ANNOUNCEMENT

The Notice of Race for the 27th Annual Sag Harbor Cup, to be hosted by Breakwater Yacht Club, is available on the club’s website: www.BreakwaterYC.org. The Cup Race will be held on Saturday, August 15th. The Race format will be a Pursuit Race whereby yachts start based on their handicap with the faster classes starting later so that all boats reach the finish line at approximately the same time. The first yacht will leave the starting line at 10:05 AM. The course is a circumnavigation of Shelter Island (subject to course shortening due to poor winds or weather).

The Sag Harbor Cup was inaugurated in 1982 and has been hosted by the BYC since 1988. The regatta mission has remained consistent over time – to support youth sailing and to inspire a love for the waters around Sag Harbor among young people. This year’s proceeds from racing entry fees, a post race party along with a reggae band (Project vibe) and silent auction will benefit the Pierson HS Sailing Team.

BYC’s Summer Race Series continues through Labor Day. The July 22nd race started with light winds (5 – 8 knots out of the NE) and the beginning of a flooding current. In Division 1, Gossip (Captains Kenny and Ames) finished first followed by Skoot (Captain Jim Vos) one minute and 45 seconds behind. Ice-Nine (Captain Tom Stewart) finished in third place 5 minutes and three seconds later. Buckaroo, Skoot and Two Potato crossed the starting line early and were forced to re-round and start again.

In Division 2, Osprey (Captain George Martin) finished first. Kingfisher (Captain Scott Gaeckle) took second place and White Lightning (Captain Jim Smyth) finished third two minutes 33 seconds and 17 seconds behind respectively.

In Division 3, Plurabelle (Captain Andrea Bourel) took first place followed by Loki (Captains Webber and Ivans) in second place and Swansway (Commodore DiSunno) in third place.

On July 29th the race started with winds out of the southwest of 10 – 14 and gusting during the race to 20 knots. The current changed from a flood to an ebb during the race. In Division 1, Skoot took first place by six seconds followed by Gossip and Buckaroo (Captain Bruce Tait) 2 minutes and 23 seconds later. In Division 2, Impromptu (Captain Sean Leary) finished first followed by Kingfisher (30 seconds behind) and Wave Equation (Captains Dinsmore and Worthing), 19 seconds later. Osprey failed to honor one turning mark and withdrew from the race.

In Division 3, Plurabelle finished first followed by Loki and Swansway, one minute 17 seconds and 15 seconds behind respectively.
